linux is another operating systom, and no it doesn’t work with windows, unless you have it on another hard drive. Linux is used by more ‘savy’ people because you can make it do things that windows whould bug out if you tryed…
Linux is an operating system created by Linus Torvalds. It is developed by a large group of programmers that improve, modify, customize, and maintain the os by keeping the source code open for scrutiny and editing. I have used various versions of Linux, and can say it is a very good, secure operating system.
As for compatibility, it can be very compatible, or not very compatible. That is how flexible Linux is. And a major factor in many companies basing their servers on Linux. They can have a custom operating system that has tons of documentation and support for very little cost. If compatibility is a major concern, I would stay with Windows in all honesty. But I also suggest trying a live distribuition of linux if you are curious. It runs completely off of a cd or dvd without changing anything, unless you make the changes.
Linux is an “alternative” operating system, there is MUCH history behind it, I wont go into the entire history but I will go in to short detail.
A long time ago (in a Galaxy far away) there was a operating system owned by AT&T (if memory serves me right), and once it was givin to colleges for free in hopes it would bring in long term profits. A short while later, the bastards decided to make everyone pay though the nose for it, and imatators came out. Ken Tompson is the person who wrote most of the unix code.
Going forward, there was a team of hackers, who did not like the way that the companies that they were working for were licencing their software, and created the GNU movement, and thanks to a man named Linus Torvalds who created the entire kernel himslef as an undergrad…history was made, and a open source operating system named linux was created.
To answer your question it is an operating system just like windows, only in most versions, the source code is given under the GNU licence (basically free to modfy).
Read the link below if you have time, it is very interesting.
To give you the brief answer, linux “does work with windows”, you can duel boot both operating systems and run then on the same system.

Linux is an operating system, just like Windows is an operating system. They aren’t related in any way.
Fedora Linux is probably the most common one around since it is opensource and can be installed and used for free.

linux is an atlernative operating system to Windows. its alot more technical and not as user friendly, but its all open-source, and usually free.
alot(i wouldn’t say most) of servers and web hosting companies use linux to run there servers because its very stable and easy to fix/upgrade.
becuase its a totally different operating system, it doesn’t work with windows(of course, since its a different operating system)
if you want to know more, i would suggest skimming the wikipedia entry on linux:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux
Linux is a variation of UNIX which was the first and is still the best network, multi-user operation system. Linux got it’s name from Linus Torvalds, a programmer who wrote a new kernel based on the UNIX system. It is open source which means it’s free to everyone.
Yes, windows is compatible with the network software of web hosting companies because the language used to communicate over the internet is common to both operating systems. TCP/IP stands for transmission control protocol/internet protocol. It is one of the modules of any operating system, including UNIX,linux, widows and Mac.
