Web Hosting Faqs – Part II

What are the commonly used web hosting terms or jargons that I should be familiar with? Bandwidth: This is a measure of the amount of information that is carried or transferred in any given period of time over the Internet.

Control Panel: Consider this the cockpit of your hosting account as gives access to all the administrative tools and features that are required to maintain and modify various aspects of your web hosting account.

DNS: The DNS or Domain Name System is a process by which the domain names are located and translated into Internet Protocol addresses.

Dedicated Hosting: With dedicated hosting, an entire web server and its resources are dedicated to a single user's website.

Shared Hosting: With shared hosting, multiple users use the resources of a single server to host multiple websites. Shared hosting is the most commonly used web hosting package because it is cheaper than dedicated hosting. However, for websites that receive large amounts of traffic, this type of hosting may not be an ideal option.

Uptime: Uptime is a term that is measured in percentile and refers to the time duration that the computer is operational. A superior web hosting company would offer an uptime guarantee of 99.99%.

What scripting languages are available for Windows web hosting? The most commonly available scripting languages include ASP, PHP and ASP.NET.

What exactly is a Virtual Private Server?

A Virtual Private Server can be understood as a fine mix between a shared hosting account and a dedicated server. With VPS, the system resources like the memory and CPU is shared among different users but the system essentials acts like a dedicated system. This is because the system resources are set up in a way that each person is allowed to utilize certain percentage of these resources. This makes the hosted websites more consistent. For easy understanding, a VPS is also referred to as a Virtual Dedicated Server.

How would I know if I need a VPS hosting account?

If you need the convenience of a dedicated server but feel the price is too high or if shared hosting is not an ideal option, then VPS could prove to be a safe choice. The cost of VPS hosting lies between a dedicated hosting account and a shared hosting account. Also, a virtual private server is more secure as compared to a shared hosting account.
