If you are hosting your own website on a local computer you don’t need any ftp (file transfer protocol) because you are sitting on top of your computer and you can add files to your site directly from folders on your drive or from a cd/dvd/usb drive..

um wow… so here’s the thing… Filezilla is a program that you use to connect to another computer and transfer files. Filezilla Server is what that other computer is running that allows you to even think about connecting to it with regular Filezilla. So they serve complimentary roles… but not the same role.

You don’t need any for your own site. Users accessing your server will use what they want, so long as you are using filezilla server.

First and formostly have a good easy to use and fast loading website, get your website high on the search engine’s in your particular area of expertise.
Outiline who are your potencial customers, people with something to sell if your good at e-commerce site’s targeting something like small childrens toys which can be inexpensive and easily posted with out damage might be a good target area.
The website you have may be all singing and dancing but if it does not say in every possible way contact me, I mean not in a blatant way but having call back boxes and free phone numbers as well as email and maybe instant messager may make it easy for your potencial customers to contact you (be vary with free phone as if your attracting customers that do not want to pay you for your services, such as students looking for freebies)
General good businees practice work’s well both online and offline, let all your friends and relatives know what you do, put your email/web address anywhere it will get noticed, reply to emails with thing like

Contact your local trade and industry groups, they may have list for you to target your business at…

post your special offers in forums
offers affiliates or reseller programs.
btw, if you had posted your website here many peoples would be visiting your website aswell and if your offer attracts them than may be they sign up for that.

I have active accounts with both.
Since I write code in ASP, windows has been better to create my own code. However, to use free website engines such as wordpress, joomla, phpnuke, mediawiki, and others, linux has worked better.
IMHO, Linux hosting is better than Windows especially if you are not going to program in ASP.

Hi!
Easy choice, the only reason you would want to go with Windows hosting is if you are planning on using ASP.net or MSSQL. If you do not plan on using either of those stick with Linux hosting and here is why:
Linux hosting is:
- More stable than windows hosting generally.
- Cheaper as it is free
- Easier to manage in most cases so a lot more competition among hosts.
